Trend Micro Internet Security 2008
(PC-cillin)
Review
The need for internet security is obvious. Without proper internet security, our computers are open to all kinds of damage from hackers who send "worms" that can literally destroy them.
But, despite the belief of some, hackers are hardly the threat they used to be. Routers with firewalls, and the Windows Firewall, for example, block most of the ports that would give others on the internet any access to your computer.
So how are our computers still getting plagued with nasty viruses, trojans, etc.? It actually happens when you visit sites or install software from untrustworthy companies (especially software downloaded and installed online).
That’s where Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 comes in. Let's face it: anti-virus and anti-spyware solutions are a dime a dozen nowadays. The process of choosing one can be overwhelming.
Trend Micro Internet Security used to be called “PC-Cillin” and had a blue pill as its icon.
The new “Pro” version of Internet Security includes added features that make it a much better value for the money.
Some such benefits include PC performance tuning (to get your machine running as fast and smoothly as possible), Wi-Fi hot-spot verification (to protect you when you’re at cafés or other locations that have Wi-Fi internet access), and identity theft protection (that’s increasingly important these days).
Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 does do what it’s supposed to, and does it well. It does use some system resources, so prepare for a slight drop in CPU performance after installing on older machines. On a modern system, the difference is negligible.
The product comes with nicely made interface which is clearly divided into three main protection related sections:
- Virus & Spyware Controls
- Home Network & Firewall Controls
- Internet & Email Controls
Each of these allows you to securely control all of the entry points of your computer and stop Internet and network based threats.
“Other settings” allows you to set how your automatic updates are performed, see each software component information, your subscription information, and more.
One of the new features that we liked when testing this new version is something that is simple, but very nice: the large buttons for “Update Now” and “Scan Now.” It makes checking your system a no-brainer.
We don’t like having to scan our systems for viruses and spyware when we're working on things, and we don’t like programs that pop up when Windows starts or in a middle of our work. Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 allows you to schedule complete scans at the time when your PC is idle (like overnight for example), and it also allows setting where you have no pop-ups if auto-update is running. The little tray icon will show it as it starts spinning so you'll still know when software update is taking place.
So, yes, Trend Micro Internet Security 2008 is good protection, so your computer will be safe from the junk that tries to install itself and ruin your investment.
